Claude Code is a terminal app that helps you work with code by using plain language. You can ask it to explain code, handle routine tasks, and help with git work. It runs in your terminal and fits into a normal coding flow.
This version is set up for Windows users who want a simple way to download the app and get it running.
- Open the download page.
- Find the latest release.
- Download the Windows file for your system.
- Save the file to a folder you can find again, like Downloads or Desktop.
If you see more than one file, pick the one for Windows. If there is a setup file, use that first. If there is a zip file, extract it before you run the app.
Use a Windows PC with:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- A working internet connection
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- 200 MB of free disk space
- A terminal window, such as Command Prompt or PowerShell
For the best results, keep Windows up to date and use the latest version of the app.
- Go to the folder where you saved the download.
- If the file is a
.zip, right-click it and choose Extract All. - Open the extracted folder.
- If the file is a
.exe, double-click it to start the app. - If Windows asks for permission, choose Yes.
- If the app opens in a terminal window, leave that window open.
If the app came with a setup file, run the setup file first, then start Claude Code from the Start menu or from the folder where it was installed.
When Claude Code starts, it may ask for basic setup steps. Follow the prompts on screen.
You may need to:
- Sign in with your account
- Allow access to your code folder
- Choose a project folder
- Confirm terminal access
If you are not sure what to choose, accept the default option and continue.
Claude Code works with simple text prompts. Type what you want it to do in plain English.
Examples:
- Explain this file
- Fix this error
- Add comments to this code
- Review my git changes
- Help me rename this function
- Create a simple README for this project
You can also ask it to handle small coding jobs that you do not want to do by hand.
Ask Claude Code to break down a file, function, or error message in clear language.
Paste an error and ask what it means. Claude Code can help you find likely causes and suggest a fix.
Use it to check changes, write commit messages, or help with common git steps.
Ask it to rename files, update text, add notes, or make small code changes across a project.
Keep your files backed up before you make large changes.
If you work on an important project, review each change before you save it.
- Run it again as administrator
- Check that the file finished downloading
- Make sure your antivirus did not block it
- Open Command Prompt first
- Run the app from that window
- Read any error text before closing the window
- Make sure you downloaded the Windows version
- If the file is in a zip folder, extract it first
- Try downloading it again from the release page
- Check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection
- Turn off VPN tools for a test
- Make sure your firewall allows the app
Keep your project files in a simple folder path like:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\ProjectsC:\Users\YourName\Desktop\ClaudeCode
Short folder paths help avoid path errors and make files easier to find.
- Use one project folder at a time
- Keep file names simple
- Save your work often
- Ask short, clear questions
- Check code changes before you apply them
