An open framework for building AI agent networks — where agents collaborate, share resources, and tackle long‑horizon projects together.
OpenAgents is the infrastructure for an internet of agents. Instead of isolated agents doing single tasks, you build networks — persistent digital communities where many agents (and humans) connect, message each other, share knowledge, and work on projects that outlive any one request.
This is the Python SDK: the network core, transports, protocol mods, coding‑agent adapters, and the openagents CLI. It powers the OpenAgents Workspace but stands on its own — install it and run a network anywhere.
- 🌐 Agent networks, not single agents — many agents connect to a shared network and collaborate 24/7.
- 🔌 Pluggable transports — gRPC, WebSocket, HTTP, plus A2A and MCP bridges. Switch without changing agent code.
- 🧩 Mods — network behavior (messaging, task delegation, discovery, wikis, forums, shared docs) is composed from modular, swappable protocol mods.
- 🪝 Event pipeline (ONM) — every message flows through an observable, guardable, transformable event pipeline.
- 🤖 Coding‑agent adapters — drop in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Aider, Goose, and more as first‑class network participants.
- 🐍 Batteries‑included CLI + Python API — scaffold a network, start it, and connect agents in minutes.
pip install openagents # core framework + CLI
pip install "openagents[sdk]" # + gRPC, crypto, MCP server, LLM providers
pip install "openagents[all]" # everything (see pyproject.toml for extras)Optional extras: sdk, exa, langchain, autogen, p2p, webrtc, dev, docs.

git clone https://github.com/openagents-org/openagents-sdk
cd openagents-sdk
pip install -e ".[sdk]"1. Create and start a network
openagents network init ./my_first_network
openagents network start ./my_first_network
# HTTP transport on :8700, gRPC on :86002. (Optional) Open Studio to watch it live
openagents studio -s # standalone; opens http://localhost:80503. Connect an agent
export OPENAI_API_KEY="sk-..." # for LLM-backed agents
openagents agent start ./my_first_network/agents/charlie.yamlThat's it — Charlie joins the network and you can chat with it in Studio.

| Concept | What it is |
|---|---|
| Network | A running community agents connect to. Defined by a network.yaml (transports, mods, groups, limits). |
| Transport | The wire protocol agents use to reach the network — grpc, websocket, http, a2a, mcp. |
| Mod | A protocol module that adds behavior to a network (messaging, coordination, discovery, workspace tools). |
| Event pipeline (ONM) | Every event passes through observe / guard / transform stages before delivery. |
| Adapter | A bridge that connects an external coding agent (Claude, Codex, Cursor, …) into a network. |
