Entity-Relation Structure

ERS is a semantic notation for Human-LLM and LLM-LLM systems, designed for token efficiency and high semantic retention - general-purpose, prompt-based, no model training, and no special tokens required.

In a preliminary QA benchmark, compressing context by 72% with ERS allowed models from 4B to 20B to retain 89-94% of their original answer accuracy compared to the source text.

This repository presents ERS as a working early-stage concept with practical applications.

Notes

  • Grouping words with snake_case presents a composite entity as a single unit of meaning.
  • Replacing natural language grammar with operators (->, ==, !=) forms direct semantic connections, clearing the context of syntactic noise.
  • Markdown hierarchy creates cohesive semantic blocks.

Observed Effects

  • Using ERS puts the model into a "code-execution" mode: the structure acts as a firm contract, binding the model to both its letter and spirit.
  • Representing knowledge as discrete snake_case blocks with explicit links helps the model more effectively align different pieces of information, uncovering hidden logic and insights often lost in the volume of normal text.

NL to ERS

  • Transform any text into an ERS artifact.
Natural language
The Transformer uses multi-head attention in three different ways:
* In "encoder-decoder attention" layers, the queries come from the previous decoder layer, and the memory keys and values come from the output of the encoder. This allows every position in the decoder to attend over all positions in the input sequence. This mimics the typical encoder-decoder attention mechanisms in sequence-to-sequence models.
* The encoder contains self-attention layers. In a self-attention layer all of the keys, values and queries come from the same place, in this case, the output of the previous layer in the encoder. Each position in the encoder can attend to all positions in the previous layer of the encoder.
* Similarly, self-attention layers in the decoder allow each position in the decoder to attend to all positions in the decoder up to and including that position. We need to prevent leftward information flow in the decoder to preserve the auto-regressive property. We implement this inside of scaled dot-product attention by masking out (setting to `-inf`) all values in the input of the softmax which correspond to illegal connections.

  • This form of semantic compression enables the LLM to understand code intent without reading the full implementation.
  • An ERS comment should only contain information that is difficult to understand from the function signature but is essential to the function’s context.

Mastering New Knowledge

Philosophy

Lacking both the redundancy inherent in natural languages and the formal semantics of formal languages, ERS is a semantic notation for semantic and cognitive processors. Its unique entities and analyzable graph make it structured enough for static analysis, even though it is not a proper formal language. Describing complex systems using paragraphs of natural language introduces unnecessary cognitive friction; ERS is well-suited for formalizing everything above the level of source code: architectures, business logic, mental models, and system contracts.

Project Status

ERS is an early-stage conceptual design. No ERS generator or static analysis tooling is provided. The current examples/ers.md prompt was written manually, without automated optimization.

ERS grew out of personal intuition and a synthesis of ideas from the following sources:

  1. Edward de Bono’s books for a general audience (I Am Right, You Are Wrong). His description of the brain as a self-organizing system shaped much of my intuition; for instance, ERS naturally resonates with concepts like "sensitization" and "table-top logic" (constructed system). My systematization of these ideas: alxraun/artificial-lateral-thinking/self-organizing-system.md.
  2. The School of Wizardry with its Grace Archmage — provided numerous core insights and helped synthesize fragmented knowledge.
