SkillGuard

Scan AI agent Skills before they run.

The problem

Agent Skills — reusable instruction packs for Claude, Cursor, and similar agents — are turning into a supply chain risk. People install them from random repos and marketplaces the same way they used to curl | bash a shell script.

A single Skill can:

SkillGuard reads Skill files as plain text and flags these patterns before the agent ever loads them. No LLM. No API key. No network call. No black box.

Every rule lives in skillguard/patterns.py — plain regex with an id, severity, and one-line explanation.


Quick start

Try it in 30 seconds (zero install, zero dependencies):

You'll see 4 blocked malicious examples and 2 safe ones — all synthetic, bundled for testing.

Reduce false positives

Skills that legitimately call external APIs should declare their domains. SkillGuard auto-detects them and suppresses network-related false positives:

Verdicts

Each finding has a severity: LOW (1) · MEDIUM (3) · HIGH (7) · CRITICAL (15).
A skill's score is the sum of all finding severities.

Verdict Score Meaning What to do
SAFE < 5, no critical Nothing obvious found Still read unfamiliar skills — this is not a guarantee
REVIEW 5 – 19 Suspicious patterns worth a human look Inspect flagged lines; may be a false positive
BLOCKED ≥ 20, or any CRITICAL High-confidence malicious indicators Do not install until resolved

Each report includes a SHA-256 hash of the skill folder — useful for detecting silent tampering between scans.

--fail-on-blocked exits with code 1 if any skill is BLOCKED — perfect for CI gates.

FAQ

Does SkillGuard run or execute the Skill?
No. It only reads files as text. Nothing is executed, sandboxed, or sent to an LLM.
Can a SAFE verdict guarantee a skill is safe?
No. SkillGuard uses static regex analysis — it catches obvious patterns but will miss cleverly reworded attacks. Treat SAFE as "nothing obvious was found," not "trust this blindly."
Why did my legitimate skill get flagged?
Common causes: an outbound HTTP call (EX001), a reference to `.env` (FS004), or lifecycle hook names (HK001). Declare expected domains in SKILL.md or use --allow-domain. A REVIEW verdict means "look at it," not "reject it."
What files get scanned?
Any folder with a SKILL.md, plus companion files: .md, .py, .sh, .js, .ts, .json, .yaml, .toml, and .mcp.json. Code inside markdown fenced blocks is scanned too.
Does it work on Windows?
Yes. Python 3.8+ on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Terminal output auto-falls back to ASCII icons on legacy code pages.

Research basis

The rule set is grounded in published findings on the Agent Skills ecosystem — not guesswork:

  • Researchers found prompt injection in over a third of skills tested, with ~1 in 8 containing critical issues, including coordinated malicious campaigns on public marketplaces.
  • Documented attacks weaponize agent lifecycle hooks (PostToolUse, SessionEnd) for silent monitoring and exfiltration.
  • Academic work demonstrated URL-based exfiltration — embedding captured data in links the model surfaces to the user.
  • MCP/agent security research (OWASP, Unit 42, CVE disclosures) documents hardcoded credentials in bundled configs, command injection, and cross-file instruction chaining as recurring real patterns.

Bundled examples under examples/ are synthetic reconstructions of these technique categories — written from scratch to exercise detection rules, not copied from live exploits.


Honest limitations

  • Regex, not semantics — reworded injection attempts can slip through
  • False positives happen — declare domains, read REVIEW findings carefully
  • One layer, not a silver bullet — pair with manual review, version pinning, and sandboxing
