Setting up the Hardware

You need an original ESP32-based M5StickC Plus-family controller and a composite adapter connected to GPIO26. See the compatibility table before choosing a controller.

The RCA adapter hat shown in the photos is not available from M5Stack. It is a small custom PCB housed in a M5StickC Proto Hat, and requires the PCB to be manufactured and assembled.

You can also assemble a compatible adapter from off-the-shelf M5Stack components.

Custom DIY RCA PCB Hat

👎 Requires PCB to be printed and extra parts soldered

  1. Print the PCB by uploading the gerber zip file to a service such as JLCPCB
    a. Set the board thickness to 1mm
  2. Order the following extra parts
    a. Yellow RCA jack (Aliexpress)
    b. 2.54mm 1x40P 90 Degree Right Angle Single Row Male Pin Header (reverse) (Aliexpress)
    c. 75 Ohm resistor
    d. 4.7 Ohm resistor
    e. M5StickC Proto Hat (M5Stack, Aliexpress)
  3. Disassemble the M5StickC Proto Hat and put the blank PCB aside
  4. Solder the parts on the PCB, following the silkscreen text. Try to match the pin header positioning from the blank PCB in the Proto Hat a. It may help to straighten the RCA jack pins with some pliers to make installation a bit easier
    b. After soldering all parts, you'll need to trim the leads pretty short as there's not much room between the PCB and the housing base
  5. Reassemble the Proto Hat

Off-the-Shelf M5Stack Components

Order the following extra parts from M5Stack:

  1. RCA Unit
  2. Grove2Dupont Conversion Cable

Connect the components as follow:

Header Pin
Black GND
Red 5V
Yellow G26
White G36/G25
