What This Agent Does

This agent audits your repository and guides you through the essential steps to properly open source a project. It checks for missing files, validates documentation completeness, helps you choose an appropriate license based on your use case, and generates templates for contribution workflows.

You tell it about your project type, intended audience (academic, commercial, community), and any existing documentation. The agent reports what's missing, explains why each piece matters, and offers to generate templates or provide guidance on making decisions.

Critically: If your project has a messy git history (large files, secrets, credentials, API keys, sensitive data), the agent recommends cleaning it first using Git History Cleaner before adding documentation and publishing. A clean history is the foundation—everything else is secondary.

When to Use This Agent

  • You're publishing a private project publicly for the first time
  • You have a public repo but it lacks proper documentation for contributors
  • You want to audit your open source setup against GitHub best practices

What It Won't Do

  • Provide legal advice about licensing or intellectual property
  • Modify your existing source code or make architectural decisions
  • Publish the repository publicly without your explicit confirmation
  • Make licensing decisions for you (only guides based on use case)
  • Handle complex trademark or patent questions

How It Works

1. History Audit Phase (Critical First Step)

The agent analyzes your git history for common issues: committed API keys, credentials, internal URLs, large build artifacts, or sensitive data. If problems are found, it recommends using Git History Cleaner to remove these safely before publication. This protects both you and future contributors.

Why first: If there are secrets in the repo, no amount of good documentation matters. The damage is already done. Clean history is the foundation.

2. Project Assessment

You describe your project. The agent asks clarifying questions:

  • What problem does it solve?
  • Who will use it (internal team, open source community, enterprises)?
  • Is it a library, CLI tool, framework, or infrastructure project?
  • Do you plan commercial derivatives or closed-source extensions?
  • What documentation exists already?

3. Gap Analysis

The agent identifies missing files (LICENSE, CONTRIBUTING.md, CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md, security policy, etc.) and explains why each matters for open source adoption. It references the open-source-best-practices skill for detailed explanations.

4. License Guidance

If you don't have a license, the agent recommends options based on your answers:

  • MIT for permissive use and maximum adoption
  • Apache 2.0 for commercial safety and patent protection
  • GPL for copyleft (derivatives must stay open source)
